 As an owner and recent foster parent of retired racing greyhounds, I have had the opportunity to share my life and home with elegant, loving, long legged creatures. I have also had the opportunity to seek out many odor eliminating products to keep my home pleasant for myself as well as my dogs.  


My dogs, Moon and Monte, made the transition to home life fairly smoothly having made a layover in an adoption kennel after being retired from the racing life and track kennel. My first foster dog was also a smooth transition as he was a 10 year old coming from another home. My second foster dog, Gus, proved to be more of a challenge. Gus, 5 years old, came straight off the racing circuit in Alabama and didn’t understand that he couldn’t use my cats as chew toys, eat chicken dinners off the counter, carry my bras all over the house, poop in the middle of my bedroom floor, use the dining room chairs as pee posts, eat shoes, tin cans, remote controls, entire yogurt containers or anything else that he could fit in his mouth that he thought would be tasty. I thought I would solve the problem by crating him, but this only caused incidents of explosive diarrhea in the crate which proved to be more problematic to clean up than the offenses committed when he was loose in the house. He was basically a three foot tall, 80 pound puppy.

Needless to say, I was growing tired of Gus and his antics and hoped everyday for a call from the adoption group saying that Gus would soon be going to his forever home. The call would eventually come but prior to that I purchased a Spa Mister from the Joie Wellness web site with a vial of Spruce essential oil to offset all the offensive odors coming from Gus.   Soon after I began using my Spa Mister with the Spruce essential oil, I noticed a marked difference in Gus’ behavior. He was much calmer, no longer chasing the cats, bullying the dogs out of their food and toys, or eating stray items off tables, counters and floors. He wasn’t perfect, but he was drastically improved. I didn’t connect Gus’s improved behavior with anything other than him learning to be a pet and live in a home instead of having to live in a crate 20 hours a day and run like hell when the time came to race.

I recounted my story to my friend who is an expert in the effects of essential oils and together we put together the cause and effect. Essential oils not only have beneficial effects for humans; animals are known to respond to the calming, neutralizing aromas of essential oils.  And Gus did respond.  His improved behavior and the use of the Spa Mister corresponded exactly! Call it coincidence, but how else could we explain such a drastic change and virtually overnight. 

I continue to use my Spa Mister and essential oils even though, happily, Gus found his forever home on Christmas Eve. The humidifying effects of mist and the comforting, healthy aroma of the diffused essential oil create improved air quality in my home and allow me and all my furry friends to exist in harmony, well pretty close anyway.
